OGJVAMC Starting New Groups for Healthier Living
The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center is starting two new groups to provide Veterans with tools for healthier living.
Moving Forward is an educational program designed for Veterans to become more successful in reaching life’s goals. The four 1-hour weekly sessions are held in a class room setting and teaches practical problem-solving skills to help Veterans overcome obstacles, like low motivation or negative attitudes, that stand in the way of achieving their dreams.
Life can be filled with constant challenges and problems. Such problems make it difficult to achieve life’s goals. This is especially true when people undergo a new life change, such as transitioning back to civilian life, or who are under a lot of stress. Such stress can involve money problems, relationship concerns, job issues, or health challenges. When stress becomes too great, it can prevent people from reaching their goals. In addition, stress can lead to emotional distress, as well as physical health problems. When this occurs, we often feel overwhelmed and confused about knowing what to do. This program was developed to help Veterans “move forward” in their lives. Moving Forward will help participants set reasonable life goals, be creative in coming up with good solutions, make better decisions, and know what steps to take when things are not going well.

Veterans struggling with sleep problems may find the new Sleep Group beneficial. Session topics include: healthy versus disordered sleep, common sleep disorders, behavioral sleep strategies, relaxation, and relapse prevention. The Sleep Group will be conducted in four sessions over two months. The group sessions will be held on the first and third Mondays of each month and last 60 to 90 minutes. There will be the opportunity for brief individual sessions after each group class.
