COVID-19 Vaccine Update from the Director

COVID Vaccine

The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center is distributing the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine to enrolled Veterans.

I would like to give a brief update regarding our recent progress in the fight against COVID-19. Our staff has put forth great effort during the pandemic, and I commend them for their service to our Veteran population.

To date, we have received 1,200 doses of the Moderna COVID vaccine. Hundreds of doses have been administered to our health care workers, Community Living Center patients, and high-risk Veterans who have chosen to receive it. At this time all these doses have been allocated.

We have ordered more doses and as they arrive, we will be calling and scheduling more Veterans. Plans for delivering the vaccine to our Community Based Outpatient Clinic personnel and eligible Veterans are being finalized. We are presently calling and scheduling appointments for Veterans who meet the risk-based criteria set forth by the VA and CDC.

To meet the present criteria Veterans must be in one or more of the following categories: 85 years-old or older; homeless, spinal cord injury, transplant, dialysis, or oncology patients; or have other high-risk issues.

There is no need for you to call us. Your VA health care team will contact you if you are currently eligible (or when you become eligible) for the vaccine based on the VA and CDC risk criteria. You don’t need to reserve a vaccine or come to a VA facility to request or receive a vaccine until we contact you.

Our goal is to provide all our enrolled Veterans access to the vaccine in a timely and efficient manner. We will accomplish this through perseverance and cooperation with employees, Veterans, and our community partners.

Thank you for your service, and as always, we look forward to serving you.
